Topic > Weather Disasters Due to Climate Change

Just recently the Philippines was hit by the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record. With climate change causing increasingly chaotic weather patterns, natural disasters are becoming more common around the world. A natural disaster is anything from an earthquake to a tropical storm. Regardless of whether the natural disaster was caused indirectly by humans, such as those caused by global warming, it has a huge impact on society. The impact on society, devastation and economic damage paint a picture of how these natural disasters have changed the lives of many. For example, in 2010, with one of the worst recorded earthquakes in the country's history, Haiti suffered a catastrophic earthquake. The earthquake, of magnitude 7.0 with 52 aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or higher, affected approximately three million people. With ruins and a death toll of over 200,000 people, the Haitian people faced a number of threats. In Simon Romero's “Quake Accentuated Chasm that has Defined Haiti,” the revelation of consequences is detailed through observation. In addition to government corruption, the number of illnesses, unemployment, homelessness and gang violence has increased within months of the earthquake. Therefore, Super Typhoon Haiyang destroyed approximately 70-80% of the structures in its path. Hitting the Philippines, this tropical cyclone has become one of the deadliest, leaving a trail of destruction that has left many citizens desperate. Due to delays in the delivery of food, water and medical supplies, fear has pushed many to take drastic action. After the storm, people broke into homes, shopping centers and garages, ransacking shelves of food, water and other goods. So much so that Romero noted in his piece the living conditions of...... middle of paper.. ....recognizing that much can be done to reduce its effects can lessen the impact it has on the area. In Spike Lee's film it was suggested that the New Orleans catastrophe was avoidable. Being poorly designed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, there were many failures with the levees. The government's failure to provide immediate aid during the first weeks after the storm was also frowned upon. Natural disasters constantly strike the world, causing destruction, death, violence and poverty. The response to these events causes many to become desperate, prompting crime and hostility. Without preparation, resources would be scarce and aid limited. With enormous impact on society the devastation and economic damage; working to find ways to limit the devastation caused by some disasters, such as hurricanes, can benefit those affected.
