Ahmed Khazaal28/4/2014The Pietà by Giovanni Della Robbia is an extraordinary glazed and painted religious terracotta dated 1510-1520. The main purpose was to introduce the meaning of biblical history to a large and predominantly illiterate audience. One of the things this image can tell us about life in Western civilization is how focused artists were on translating the Bible and trying to understand it without the help of the Catholic Church through art and humanism. The Pietà is one of the richest and best-known collections of Della Robbia sculptures from the Renaissance period. The author of the sculpture is Giovanni Della Robbia; the first and epic of a dynasty of important potters, decorators, potters and terracotta makers. Della Robbia developed a unique ceramic glaze that made his creations much more durable outdoors and therefore very suitable for use on the exterior of buildings. It was an extraordinarily formal and refined technique that immediately achieved great success, so much so that the Della Robbia family's business flourished for over a hundred years. It uniquely combines time-related archaeometric and stylistic information about the Renaissance age in Western civilization. In its context, La Pietà was created in the 15th century, the Renaissance age, when there was a surge in artistic, literary and scientific activity, especially in Florence, the third largest city in Europe, an independent republic where it began the Italian Renaissance. and banking and commercial capital after London and Constantinople. The Renaissance era in which this sculpture was created was also marked by some important events such as: religious problems in the church, Erasmus publication of the Greek edition of the New Treatment ...... middle of paper ......or growing up in this period, it is fully revealed and depicted in this sculpture. On the other hand, the colors, bright and lively polychromatic, brought the entire sculpture to life. At first glance, ceramic seems rather simple but has a unique charm. The calm, innocent and humble appearance while in a painful moment was unprecedented, and was enough for the viewer to admire and fall in love with this sculpture and its meaning. The distinctive character of glazed terracotta is the smooth, brilliant, often polychrome covering, which has largely contributed to the success of such artefacts, and which recalls, in its plastic compositions, the works of Verrocchio and Filippo Lippi. However, Giovanni's art in this sculpture is elegant, remarkable and a mix of sophisticated religious themes with ancient mannerisms and with monumental emphasis.
