Topic > William Jones and Pi - 1908

William Jones is a famous mathematician who created and was the first to use pi. William was born on a farm on Anglesey, then moved to Llanbabo on Anglesey, only to move again after William's father died. He attended a charity school in Llanfechell. There his mathematical talent was noticed by the local landowner who got him a job in London. His job was in a merchant's accounting office. This job required Jones to serve at sea during a voyage to the West Indies. He taught mathematics and navigation on board ships between 1695 and 1702. He served on a naval ship that. Navigation was a subject that interested Jones greatly and his first published work was "A New Compendium of the Whole Art of Navigation". It was published in 1702, the year he returned from his trip. In his book he applied mathematics to navigation, studying methods for calculating position at sea. He was soon employed as tutor to Philip Yorke, who would later become Baron Hardwicke of Hardwicke. This was an important position for Jones as Yorke, after a legal career, entered parliament becoming solicitor-general in 1720, solicitor-general in 1724, lord chief justice in 1733 and lord chancellor in 1737. Jones tutored Yorke for around three years. . In 1706 he published “Synopsis Palmariorum Mathesios”. The book was based on his teaching notes intended for beginning mathematicians. It included differential calculus, infinite series and is also famous as the symbol pi is used with its modern meaning. In 1709 he applied for a place in the Mathematical School of Christ's Hospital. He provided references from Isaac Newton and Edmond Halley. He didn't get the job, so he continued to lecture in cafes. It was not successful. the diameter could not be expressed as a rational number. Jones married Mary Nix on April 17, 1731, she was 25 and Jones was 56. They had three children, two of whom reached adulthood. William Jones died on July 1, 1749 in London, England. Works Cited "William Jones". History today. Np, 2012. Web.
