Do you think you would be happy if you had a person or thing you could love? Do you want the person you love to return the same love to you? Love and loss are intimately associated. When you love someone or something, you may not worry about losing another person or thing at the same time. As in the stories “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Beast in the Jungle” by Henry James, the two authors described the different types of love of two women, but after finding their love, they also suffered to deal with a huge loss in their life. These stories seemed to have been written in the same period, but the love attitude of the two authors was totally different. Love was a personal attitude; the loss was the value that the person thought was worth paying for love and which could be influenced by different cultures. One woman gained love from her husband's death and the other woman dedicated herself to waiting for his love. In "The Story of an Hour," Louise Mallard is deeply saddened by the death of her husband in a train accident, but immediately recognizes that she has earned her love, i.e., freedom from her husband. May Bartram, the protagonist of “The Beast in the Jungle”, gave her whole life to wait for John Marcher, who she loved. Comparing these two women, Louise had a husband and they loved each other, but she did not enjoy love until her death. She loved freedom more than him, but if he hadn't died, she would have continually sacrificed her freedom to maintain their marriage. May loved John until his death, but never received love from him. She gave her golden moment to a man and maybe she knew he would never love her. However, she has never regretted wasting her life waiting and watching... middle of paper... If they had the opportunity to tell these men what they wanted, they could have achieved their love sooner, and their cost may not be their death. The culture of their generation limited their feelings and expressions of love and made them pay the highest prices when they obtained love. In "The Story of an Hour" and "The Beast in the Jungle", when Louise and May began to love each other, at the same time they also began to lose due to cultural limitations. In these two stories, Louise's outcome might seem better than May's because at least Louise died in joy. However, these two women simply pursued different types of love, but paid the same price that they deemed their love worthy. Sometimes when you love a person or thing, you may have to shell out and sacrifice what you already have, so how much do you think you will pay for your loves??
