A company's organizational culture “can be defined as a set of values, norms, and artifacts, including ways of solving problems shared by members (employees) of an organization . Over time, stakeholders see the company and the organization as a living organism, with a mind and will of its own.” It can be summed up as “the way we do things around here” (Ferrell 143-181). The organizational culture of a company is learned mainly through its artifacts; stories, rituals, language and symbols. Stories are narratives that contain elements of cultural value and beliefs, often involving its founders. Usually stories that anchor what's happening now to what happened, involving a hero. Rituals are repetitive sequences of events that reinforce key values. Language is the acronyms and jargon used that let others know you have assimilated. And symbols are usually some sort of method of conveying values beyond stories, rituals, and language. The case "How EDS Got Its Groove Back" written by Bill Breen concerns Dick Brown who was recruited by the EDS board of directors as its CEO. . Before being recruited, Brown was CEO of British telecommunications company Cable & Wireless for two years; making him the first outsider to lead EDS in its 36-year history, at the time. It came with an unmistakable message: “The culture of a company is actually the behavior of its people. And leaders get the behavior they tolerate.” When Brown saw him, the phone in his office didn't ring; he called a technician to explain the problem. The technician told him that the company's previous CEO had cut the phone lines; to avoid incoming calls. The company that invented the computer services industry has gone offline. After receiving his phone line... in the middle of a sheet of paper... DS. He quickly realized that EDS's flaw was in his culture. My analysis of this case concerned the characteristics of EDS's organizational culture before and after Dick Brown was recruited as its CEO. The type of leader he was for EDS and how effective his leadership skills and styles were. I also commented on its effectiveness in changing EDS culture. He made the eagles flock together.
