Literature as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is "the body of written works produced in a particular language, country, or era." The literature is available in different variations, languages and from different countries. Canadian literature is literature made exclusively by an author of Canadian descent who understands what life as a Canadian is about. The Canadian play I chose to read was Toronto Mississippi by Joan Macleod. The show has several themes that can be used as teaching tools in Canadian English lessons. The theme of disability is the theme around which the show revolves. The talented playwright Joan Macleod has once again created another successful work and it should be used as a teaching tool to teach students in Canadian English classes. Joan Macleod was born in 1954 in Vancouver, British Columbia. After Ms. Macleod graduated from the University of British Colombia, she attended a six-week poetry workshop and eventually discovered the uniqueness of becoming a playwright after this workshop and in her own words she said that " to have become passionate" (The Columbia Encyclopedia of Modern Drama). He got his first big break in 1985, when Toronto's Tarragon Theater accepted his first play titled Jewel. She would then be in the Playwrights' Unit for 6 years and during those 6 years had premiered 3 new plays; one such play was Toronto Mississippi, which premiered at the Tarragon Theater in 1987. He has won countless awards for his different plays, his most recent award being the Siminovitch Prize for Drama in 2011, when he won this award by the jury who awarded her unique voice, her masterful storytelling and the impact her work has had on audiences in Canada and beyond” (Canadian Theater Encyclopedia). Mrs Macle...... middle of paper ...... disability can be taught but may be a bit of a sore subject for students who have suffered from these problems. Teachers can use films and videos to show what can happen when a family lacks a mother or father figure. According to Lisa A. Miles, a dysfunctional family is "affected by mental illness, trauma resulting from tragedy or simply because it is led by individuals with poor parenting skills." (PsychCentral). A student who has faced this problem may not feel comfortable with this. The same can be applied to any theme or topic discussed in the show. If a teacher wants to teach how to deal with a handicapped person, she could have her students say sentences backwards just like Jhana did to show how difficult it may have been for Maddie to deal with. These topics, if taught the right way by the right teacher, can be a great game to teach.
