The TempestTo what extent do you agree that Caliban and Ariel represent two sides of Prospero's character?During "The Tempest by William Shakespeare", we see the previous Duke of Milan, Prospero, take action as supreme leader, an island god. Ariel and Caliban show parts of Prospero's two-faced character. Caliban is a "wild slave", which shows Prospero's ruthless nature having another side, like Ariel, a loyal slave who has respect for his master after being saved from the tree, "Hail all! Great master" , showing Prospero as a good Samaritan, giving hope to the people he will return to in Milan. They both show the different characteristics of Prospero, he has loyalty and fairness, but struggles not to be wild and ruthless. The title of the play is a metaphor for all the interruptions and terror that happens at the beginning of the play. "The Tempest" is a metaphor, showing allegorical meanings and tones. This text is full of deeper meanings, visions of Prospero's character through events done by other characters such as Ariel and Caliban. However, there is a clear class difference. Blank verse is spoken by upper class characters such as Prospero, but Caliban speaks in prose demonstrating lower class. This shows a big difference between Prospero and Caliban. The use of riddles highlights the differences between the upper class Miranda and Prospero and the lower class Ariel and Caliban. “What I long to give, much less take What I will die to want,” a riddle Miranda addresses to Ferdinand, both upper-class characters. Prospero's character is ruthless, violent and power-hungry, but he has another side, caring parenthood. and loving who enjoys young love between his d...... in the center of the card ......ow his book of magic and his staff over the edge of the ship, this shows the end of a chapter in his life, leaving the slavery and exploitation of the two creatures on the island. This means that Prospero becomes a loving parent again by returning to Milan. This will have been a great relief to Caliban and Ariel as they move towards freedom in their minds as well as enjoying the island. So overall we see that Caliban and Ariel demonstrate parts of Prospero, Caliban representing the harsh and ruthless side and Ariel representing the cunning plans and incognito attitude, both reflect parts of Prospero's character. Both of their characters provide a deeper insight into Prospero, the planner and creator of devious schemes and the harsh evictor who has no mercy on those who oppose him. 1,276 words Bibliography York Notes for GCSE The Tempest The Tempest, by Wi
