“Man must develop a method for all human conflicts that rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of this method is love” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). In the dramatic monologue “The Laboratory” by Robert Browning, many concepts and themes are revealed to convey a message about the harsh consequences of punishment and distrust. The character in this poem, a ruthless and bitter woman, is attempting to take revenge on the women the character's lover left for. This poem takes place while the speaker is in a local apothecary and asks the alchemist to create a poison for her in exchange for a considerable sum of riches. Ultimately the character is planning to use this poison to kill the woman who took her lover. The speaker then continues through the entire monologue describing the process of developing the poison and describing her true intention and ideas about how she is truly envious of that other woman. Robert Browning uses a number of devices in this poem, "The Laboratory," to reveal the personality of an immoral, jealous, and irritated human being. Browning establishes this character image through the use of revealing word choices, closing juxtapositions, and alliteration. To begin with, the character in this dramatic monologue has clear immoral behavior in the style of speaking throughout the poem; her choice of words reveals her as a truly ruthless person. Initially, it becomes clear that at the beginning of the poem "The Laboratory" the character is clearly attempting to perform an action that is both dishonest and vindictive: "As you ply your trade in this devil's forge" (Browning, 3 ). The poem in the first stanza foreshadows an act of revenge and... middle of paper... an exasperated human being through the strong use of detailed poetic devices. Browning uses revealing vocabulary, decisive comparisons, and alliteration to truly reveal the person in a unique way. First, the person is seen as evil, dishonest, and depraved due to the very strong use of word choice. Furthermore, Browning uses juxtaposition to show how the person is so intact with the world of envy and deception. Ultimately, it becomes clear that the person is ultimately an anger-stricken and furious human being through the definite use of alliteration. The person turns out to be a very jealous and sadistic person who sees murder as the answer that exposes him to being a psychopathic person. It is now clear that individuals must evolve beyond the world of revenge, aggression and retaliation, otherwise the poisonous effect of revenge will be incurable..
