Many artists attempt to be “avant-garde”, to present something new to the world; such as artists of the cubist period, Braque and Picasso. They are known for not including a clear perspective and for having geometric shapes. There are also avant-garde artists who look to the past for inspiration; for example Neoclassicism (David's Oath of the Horatii) and the Renaissance (Raphael's School of Athens) both include the Greek and Roman coalition. Avant-garde artists show the viewer their uniqueness and ambition in presenting something new by incorporating older traditions or simply going beyond the modern world and creating something new. David's Oath of the Horatii was a symbolic painting for the French because it symbolized the war that was yet to come for them. This oil painting features 3 brothers from Rome taking an oath to the swords their father is giving them and three very emotional women. During the Enlightenment, they saw women as incapable of being heroic because they were too caught up in their emotions; and this may be something David is trying to show. One of the women cries because her brother killed her husband (who was one of the Alba competitors who fought against the brothers; and they were enemies). Because the sister was so weak and emotionally unstable, the brother killed her. He also had Roman pride, and he didn't like that his sister cried over the fall of a man from Alba and didn't rejoice over Rome's victory. This showed that the brothers were very patriotic for Rome and would do anything for their beloved home. When we look at the artwork, we have the feeling that it is Greek because of the figures that look like Greek sculptures, especially the... center of the paper... Braque and Picasso tried to create something that was different and unexpected; and they succeeded. Braque got rid of perspective, not because he didn't understand, but to show people that art is not based on the techniques used and how you paint, but on what you paint. Picasso, on the other hand, changed the concept of art by creating a collage and making art and sculpture collide. Avant-garde artists are not only those who create new ideas and think about the future, there are also artists who look at the past and incorporate it into the new. Like David and Raphael, they clashed Greek and Roman aspects with perspective and their style; and make their artwork look realistic, showing both of them the talent they have. No matter what kind of avant-garde artist (forward thinker or inspired by the past) there may be, their works are unique.
