Topic > "Letter from Birmingham Jail" by King and "A..." by Swift

Martin Luther King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" is a very sophisticated argument that gets to the point, but at the same time gets very deep and complex . The letter is a historic and emotional letter that spoke to the hearts of people across America. It was also well thought out and written with a very deep meaning. Using three categories of persuasion, ethos, pathos and logos, King was able to reach the much needed personal level with his audience As well as letting the reader know that he had valid ideas and reasons Going to the personal level would allow King to explain his view of what was right and wrong King's letter was the more important argument than Swift's, because he knew what his argumentative goal was, to get the audience on his side to show them what needed to be changed From reading "A Modest Proposal" I felt that you had to bring out the point Swift was trying to prove. I also got the sense that Swift's audience wasn't getting the sarcasm she was trying to convey. In any topic you come across, you will show the audience (whether it is one person or a larger group of people) that you are right and try to change their minds or make them look at the topic differently. If King hadn't had the reader on his side it would have been extremely difficult to achieve the result he was looking for. The way King got the clergymen to listen to him was to make himself their equal by saying, “I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state with its headquarters in Atlanta , Georgia. ." (701). This was one of the strategies that King was able to use. This allowed his audience and his fellow clergy to hear... halfway down the paper... the hat had to be changed. If King if had he not written this letter he would not have had the opportunity to change the view of segregation. Changing a reader's mind is a difficult thing to do. I felt that Martin Luther King was a master in the art of persuasion. when you suddenly find yourself with a twisted tongue and stammering words as you try to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and you see the tears welling up in her little eyes when the is told that Funtown is closed to children of color, and sees the depressing cloud of inferiority begin to form in his little mental sky, and sees it begin to distort his little personality by unconsciously developing a bitterness towards white people." your enemies, bless those who curse you, pray for those who use you with contempt."
