Topic > The Pros and Cons of Welfare in America - 1259

The well-being of people in America is placed in the hands of public administrators and political leaders of the United States. These public administrators and political leaders are elected to push new bills and find solutions that will be in the best interest of the public welfare. When discussing the topic of welfare, the first thought that comes to mind is to give money to disadvantaged and disadvantaged people to help them get out of a difficult financial situation and/or temporary unemployment. Middle and upper class welfare is not as common due to the fact that people collect financial support from their work. There are several distorted assumptions about the welfare program in America that leave the topic open to discussion. Like food stamps and how low-income Americans are given taxpayer money to provide food for their families. I am against the Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the toll it is placing on American taxpayers. Food stamps are used to purchase food from local grocery stores, supermarkets, or shelters that serve meals. The government provides participants with an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) that delivers benefits on a plastic card. The amount loaded onto the card ultimately depends on the number of people in the household and the income provided. Typically, people who qualify for food stamps are low-income families. Seventy-six percent of food stamp participant households include an elderly person, a child, or an individual with a disability (U.S. Department of Agriculture). I am now classified as a US adult and can give my opinion when it comes to voting. I've been researching food stamps all semester and as... middle of paper...... s around food stamp participants, I've given discounted products to participants and limited certain food brands to invest in with their benefits. As I stated previously, I am against food stamps. I am against it because it creates a tax on American taxpayers. We are contributing to fraud, rising obesity rates, and people having no incentive to work. The government makes food stamps so easy to access with such low qualifications. Even though the working poor receive “free” money for food, they still have no motivation to improve their lives and get a job. I care about this issue because I, as a young adult, pay taxes myself. I hope the government will also consider eliminating or reforming the Supplement Nutrition Assistant Program in a more efficient way that can benefit not only the working poor but also American taxpayers..
