Enterprise resource planning systems are “rapidly becoming indispensable for large and medium-sized organizations to manage their operations” (Basu & Lederer, 2004). Therefore, management must be familiar with the ERP process and the many components and complexities that encompass ERP architecture in an organization. Overall, the first chapter of the textbook provides an “overview of information systems, ERP systems and their history, how they came into being, where they came from, and why they exist” (Motiwalla & Thompson, 2011). Essentially, ERP systems roles integrate various information systems processes with the goal of supporting the many functions of an organization. Furthermore, this is achieved through the development of “comprehensive software applications that support critical organizational functions” (Motiwalla & Thompson, 2011). The text discusses the vast evolution of ERP systems and the components that influence ERP architecture. Efficiency is one of the main components of ERP implementations and as a result many organizations seek this business process alternative with the aim of improving organizational efficiency and worker productivity. The fact that ERP systems have the ability to integrate business processes and the functionality of an organizational infrastructure by combining business functions into an integrated software environment makes ERP an attractive option for many organizations. To fully understand the evolution of the ERP system we must first analyze how ERP systems integrate into the business life cycle of organizations.
