You may know something about some types, but you can learn so much more. A common type of cancer is leukemia. Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. You may have heard of it or think you know it all, but common facts aren't everything. Leukemia is named after the type of cancer it is. It comes from the Greek leukos meaning “white” and aima meaning “blood” (Medical News Today). Leukemia was first recognized in 1845 by Rudolf Virchow (Siegel & Newton, 15). Performing an autopsy, he discovered many white blood cells in the bloodstream. What it is is simple. Leukemia is a form of cancer that impairs the body's ability to produce blood cells (Siegel & Newton, 10).
