Topic > The Importance of Female Genital Mutilation - 2206

Traditional practices passed down from generation to generation are common in Africa and some parts of Asia. Often known to possess cultural importance, some of these practices have influenced the lives of the inhabitants in both positive and negative ways. One such practice is female circumcision (FC), which has such negative effects that opponents call it female genital mutilation (FGM). Although not everyone agrees that female genital mutilation is the most appropriate term to apply to this tradition, in modern times audiences around the world have begun to accept female genital mutilation as a more suitable expression to articulate such a horrible violation of human rights. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is the collective name given to various traditional practices that involve the cutting of female genitalia. The procedure is commonly performed on girls as a rite of passage into womanhood. It is generally performed by a traditional practitioner – often an older woman – who comes from a family where generations of women have traditionally been practitioners; their heritage gives them the authority to proceed without a medical degree. FGM has been found to have significant cultural importance to people who support the practice which in local dialects is often synonymous with cleansing or cleansing. Therefore, the way people view FGM can be seen in the change in prevalence rates. Although some indigenous tribes in Africa and cultures throughout Asia may believe that female genital mutilation (FGM) is an essential procedure that all women must undergo for healthy growth. and a social lifestyle, FGM is one of the most harmful practices carried out on young women because it deprives them of the right to health, safety...... middle of paper ......rls subjected from 5 years infibulation. Considering the fact that these beliefs hold great significance in the hearts of such tribes and communities, FGM has been and will always be a violation of women's rights across the world. In modern times when people strive for freedom and equality among all social classes of race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, political ideology, education level and ethnicity, the fact that such an act of discrimination exists is really a shame. The above examples have demonstrated how horrific FGM is and its effects on women and society. It is therefore the duty of the governments and people of the affected nations to join forces and work together, stopping discriminating against their mothers, sisters and daughters; create a society and community equal to every citizen and inhabitant and put an end to FGM once and for all.
