The Metamorphosis Research Paper Franz Kafka, in his novel The Metamorphosis, explores two contrasting ideas through his protagonist Gregor: unity and isolation. Gregor's transformation created a lifetime of suffering for him, but on the other hand it also created a better and deeper relationship with the rest of the family. Gregor's transformation into a Parasite created a new life of separation and isolation for him. Before the transformation, Gregor already felt isolated and stressed because he was the only one who worked and did not have a good relationship within his family. Kafka states, “I constantly see new faces, no relationships that last or become more intimate.” Gregor is a traveling salesman who is always seeing new people and can never maintain a lasting relationship with anyone. He is stuck at home throughout the story; he is still unable to connect with anyone, this was just the beginning of his isolation. Franz Kafka once said, “His room, an ordinary human room, only a little small, lies peacefully between its four familiar walls.” (p.2) After the transformation, Gregor takes a look at his room. The expression "normal human room" is for humans and not parasites like him, and suggests that he already feels uncomfortable in his own room. Gregor began to feel more isolated due to his transformation into an insect. One of the things that bothered him was his appearance. Sheldon Goldfarb agrees with this, stating, “Gregor realizes this too, and tries to hide his revulsion from his mother and sister when they enter his room. He spends hours arranging a sheet to cover himself so they don't have to see them." Gregor is afraid of what he has become and believes that... the medium of paper... increases his image in the eyes of his parents. Basically it was Grete who admired Gregor, but now the situation is reversed. Finally Grete states "It will be the death of you two, I see it coming". Grete continues to insist that Gregor is no longer part of the family. According to her, in fact, Gregor is contributing to the disintegration of the family and must be killed to help save the family. Grete was the worried one and now refuses to call him her brother, and insists that he must be eliminated just like any old household nuisance. Franz Kafka had explored two contrasting ideas with the use of his protagonist Gregor: unity and isolation. Gregor's transformation shaped an entire life from which he could not escape. But on the other hand, his family members have managed to improve since his isolation. Especially Grete who has gone through her own metamorphosis
