The Government: Controls Everything You Do. Many people would think that saying things like this would make someone seem crazy or some sort of conspiracy theorist. Although it turns out that these claims are true in the sense that many governments and not just the United States are surveilling their citizens and other people around the world by monitoring and recording their phone calls, emails and other communications. The main way this has come to light has been the recent ongoing controversy with the NSA and leaks from whistleblowers like Edward Snowden. These revelations are raising doubts in the minds of people who want to bring about changes or reforms in governments. Through this revelation, made with the help of whistleblowers and news sources, there are questions about what prompted this agency to start, how they are operating, what they know, what is causing so much attention on this specific current event, and what is driving people to demand change and reform. The NSA, or National Security Agency, is "the largest intelligence agency in the United States, responsible for the collection and analysis of communications and signals intelligence, as well as cybersecurity" (MacAskill, Borger and Greenwald par 1- 2). Since its inception, “the very existence of the National Security Agency was not revealed more than two decades after its establishment in 1952” (MacAskill, Borger, and Greenwald par. 1). and since “its structure and activities remain largely unknown.
