In a study conducted by Gilbert and Weaver, the correlation between sleep deprivation, sleep quality and academic performance was examined (Gilbert and Weaver, 2010). The degree of knowledge regarding this particular topic has not been well studied due to the small sample size used. The PSQI involves a subscale scoring system that measures “subjective qualities such as sleep latency, duration, habitual sleep efficiency, complaints, medication use, and daytime dysfunction” (Gilbert and Weaver, 2010). This last part was added to determine the global sleep quality score (GSQ). Scores for this survey measurement range from 0 to 21, with higher scores indicating poorer sleep quality and habits (Gilbert and Weaver, 2010). The study involved 468 university students, 167 males and 301 females, with a major in psychology. By relying on self-report, we trust students to answer each survey question honestly and accurately. If students answered questions falsely, our results could be negatively and inaccurately affected. According to our research, we expect a correlation between sleep deprivation and academic performance. Therefore, we would like to campaign on correct sleep habits for undergraduate and graduate students. It is important to educate and improve students' sleep habits as sleep is important for high levels of cognitive functioning to perform well academically (Gilbert and Weaver, 2010).
