Topic > Dyslexia Reform in Texas: Implementing Policy in Its...

The state of Texas, the first to adopt a law requiring education for students with dyslexia in 1985, continues to set the standard when deals with educational reform on dyslexia (T. Fiandre, personal communication, 30 August 2011). Until recently, little attention has been paid to the use of assistive technologies (AT) for students with mild disabilities, particularly in the field of dyslexia education and intervention (Edyburn, 2006, p. 18). With the passage of Senate Bill 866, implementing classroom technology plans for students with dyslexia, the pursuit of reform has become of the utmost importance (The Texas State Senate-Information News and Events of the 82nd Legislative Session, 2011). Although Texas is proactive in its decision-making regarding dyslexia policies, there continues to be a gap between dyslexia mandates and the implementation of dyslexia reform, in which teachers are required to perform tasks that have not been fully accomplished by lawmakers . Dyslexia is caused by a lack of maturation in the part of the brain responsible for language. A positive aspect of this disorder is the receptivity of dyslexic students towards visual, spatial and lateral thinking skills that can be intensified and promoted through the use of computer programs (Camarata, 2006). TA includes, but is not limited to, the use of any technical aids, devices, tools, or adaptations that support students in the educational environment (Loftus, 2009). Phipps, Sutherland, and Seal (2002) highlight the importance of matching assistive technology to the individual using it rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all mentality. Trial and error is often required to determine the appropriate tools and techniques for a specific user (“DO-IT,” 2010).
