Bullying in the Nursing ProfessionHelen DavisSojourner-Douglass CollegeLibrary ResearchEng 243Mr. MorrisMay 3, 2014In healthcare workplaces, bullying is a very serious, complicated and growing problem. Bullying can lead to intimidation, feelings of apprehension, nervousness, panic and depression. Workplace bullying has become a major factor contributing to the increasing rate of job dissatisfaction, absences from work, lost productivity and workplace injuries in healthcare institutions. This may be due to newly hired nurses, nursing students, poor supervisor support, increased workload, understaffing or poor work team relationships, and lack of resources. Eliminating workplace bullying includes much-needed education and the development of new policies. All nurses have the right to work in a healthy environment free from this type of abuse. This qualitative study aims to identify the problem of bullying at Deer's Head Hospital Center in Salisbury, Maryland, and find solutions to prevent this type of behavior. Problem Statement The problem is that workplace bullying is affecting the nursing profession at Deer's Head Hospital Center in Salisbury, Maryland. The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations points out that over 50% of nurses say they are victims of abuse at work and over 90% say they have witnessed abusive behavior (Olender-Russo, 2009). StudyThe purpose of this qualitative study is to present the history of this issue in nursing, raise awareness of the challenges associated with workplace bullying among nurses, and offer potential solutions. Bullying in nursing may be due to... half of the paper... (geriatric nursing assistant) who provides direct patient care and works closely with nurses. That's when I learned about the bullying problem at Deer's Head Hospital Center. After a few years I was promoted to Medical Records Technician, and my responsibilities became working closely with the doctors and nurses on the unit involving admissions, patient orders, patient information and discharges. I work directly on the hospital units. With my position I am aware of what goes on in the nursing units between supervisors, nurses, geriatric nurse assistants, patients and administration. I witness many of the bullying issues that occur at Deer's Head Hospital Center in Salisbury, Maryland. References Olender-Russo, L. (2009).
