Now the speaker is experiencing love, he is “in the midst of it” (16) and his vision has changed. Love is no longer bumpy and erratic, it is now stabilized and settled into lines. The trick is to understand the direction of these lines and find a path through the maze of possibilities. The boat has become a train and the journey in search of love is a map, going in all directions. The fact that it is “underground…hidden” (17) implies that it is not yet easy to find or follow. Like the stars in the third verse, we must learn to read the signs. The lack of a “scale” (18) confirms the immeasurability of love and echoes the mathematical theorem that this poem hopes to define.
