Simone De Beauvoir said in her book Second Sex “you are not born a woman, but you become a woman” (Beauvoir, 1973, p. 301). This shows that the Beauvoirs believed that gender is an aspect of one's identity that we discover gradually. She says that gender is socially constructed and that it is also particularly important in the construction of our identity. If gender is a part of someone's identity that they struggle with, this can cause a lot of problems in their social world because of how we gender our daily activities. It's a generalization to say that "all women like to shop" or "all men like to watch sport", but as a society this is something we consider social, and if you can't take part in those activities you will tend to be marginalized in
