Nick Carraway demonstrates this by talking about four men who deliver an unnamed woman to the wrong family during one of the nights of his stay in the East. Carraway states: “…Four solemn men in elegant suits walk along the sidewalk with a stretcher on which lies a drunken woman in a white evening dress. Her hand, hanging to one side, sparkles coldly with jewels. This quote defines the meaning of negligence, as they carry the drunk woman in such a way that she appears almost dead. The men at least could not have walked so solemnly and could have put the cold woman's hand back on the stretcher, instead of letting it dangle over the edge of the stretcher. Nick Carraway then goes on to describe what happened next and said: “Severely, the men went to a house, the wrong house. But no one knew the woman's name and no one cared." This quote adds further value to the fact that the four solemn men have no respect or dignity, as they carry the woman gravely, as if she were a corpse and not a living human being. Furthermore, it is said that these men did not care where the woman lived, although they took her to a house, even if it was the wrong one. This not only shows negligence, but also shows carelessness on their part. So,
