Nowadays people love high-tech computers, smartphones and all kinds of gadgets. But before people can enjoy them, someone has to create the program to run the device. This is where software engineers come in. The field itself branches into many fields including cybersecurity, networks, computer software and hardware. They have the difficult task of designing the body and mind of the computer. Computer engineering is an ever-growing field that makes computers smaller, faster, and more efficient, creating a more technological environment for society. Computer engineering is a relatively new career compared to other professions. Computer engineering began in the mid-20th century. “Case Western Reserve University's computer engineering program was the first accredited program in the nation in 1971” (History). With this accredited program came the rise of a computer engineering career. People could now learn the fundamentals of computer engineering in college. With the advent of technology, computer engineering has exploded. In the 21st century, computer engineering has become a very broad field. As of 2004, there were approximately 170 ABET-accredited computer engineering programs in the United States. Computer engineering can be found in all types of industries involving anything to do with technology. Major industries that hire software engineers include information technology, telecommunications, energy and power, aerospace, biomedical, manufacturing, transportation, and automotive. Each of these industries branches into many different industries, so basically software engineers can be found almost everywhere. Many things define software engineers and their careers.
