Niels Henrik David Bohr Introduction What was your world like? Bohr married Margrethe Nørlund in 1912. He had a great marriage which resulted in him having six children but unfortunately two of the boys died as infants. The other four had successful careers. My sons are Hans Henrik (doctor), Erik (chemical engineer), Aage (Ph.D., theoretical physicist) and Ernest (lawyer). He received the Nobel Prize in 1922 for atomic structures. When did you live? He was born October 7, 1885 http://histclo.com/bio/b/bio-bohrn.html Where did you live? Lived and grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark with a civil and loving family http://histclo.com/bio/b/bio-bohrn.html What was your family life like? Mother: Ellen Adler came from a wealthy Jewish family famous in Danish banking and was also involved in politics Father: Christian Bohr, born in 1855 earned a doctorate (the highest degree awarded by a graduate school or other educational organization approved) and was professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen and was known for his work on the physical and chemical aspects of respiration (breathing), he received his medical degree in 1878 http://dwb.unl.edu/Teacher/NSF /C06/C06Links/ 207.138.35.143/nobel/macro/5000_79.html What other major world events have occurred in your lifetime? In his life he lived through both the First and Second World Wars. Bohr had to leave Germany in the 1940s because the Nazi secret police wanted to arrest him because he was Jewish. After leaving the country, he was told about the Manhattan Project and was supposed to work on it with passion. What contributions have you made overall? Bohr's theoretical work contributed largely to sc...... half of paper ......could cause harm to people, so Bohr stopped working on the atomic bomb to support atomic energy. Since the discovery of the structure of the atom, other scientists discovered that splitting the nucleus creates an enormous amount of energy calculated at around 200 million volts. Scientists later figured out how to harvest all that energy which led to the invention of nuclear energy and power plants, which now accounts for 6% of the amount of energy produced today https://sites.google.com/a/ cssstudent.com/bio-of-niels-bohr/how-did-niels-bohr-affect-us-todayHow has your work helped us understand the world? How did it influence future scientists? Who was affected? He was one of the most influential people and influenced a German man named Werner Heisenberg, a friend of collage, who was one of the most important developers of quantum theory in the world. 1920
