Introduction Adequate levels of adequately trained and equipped nurses are needed to address the difficult quality and protection issues persisting in healthcare. The nursing shortage is not only seen as a workforce problem, but also as a high-level care problem. In healthcare systems, 80% of registered nurses constitute professions that replace 2.6 million jobs. This forms a basis on which their significance and impact on the provision of health to patients are highlighted. Common roles expected of a professional nurse include: providing direct care to patients in hospital, setting up emergencies, providing care in community health settings, home health care and other settings of care (Joint Commission, 2010). As indicated by (Delamaire and Lafortune, 2010), a nurse performs roles such as diagnosis, screening, prescription of drugs, medical tests, prevention and health education activities, monitoring of patients with persistent diseases and coordination of care. On the other hand, clinical nurses, where they exist, perform clinical practice, education, research and leadership roles. Trends in Nursing Education for Patient Care In contrast to hiring more nurses to address the many issues related to excellence and profitable care delivery, highly educated nurses are needed to address a challenging patient population with levels increasing numbers of incessant illnesses and acutely ill patients while receiving health care. With current social, economic, political and technological trends, a more diverse workforce is needed. Changes in; population demographics, cost-cutting pressures, rational staffing levels, and technological advances, among other trends, necessitate a transformed nursing workforce (…… halfway through … can be provided. It is necessary to encourage multidisciplinary cooperation due to the intensification of roles in both the management and expression of patient care. More funding is needed to help nursing research address challenging new healthcare issues. There are also new opportunities in the reform of healthcare delivery techniques assistance, research and teaching throughout the nursing profession due to the convergence of new technologies.
