Although there are studies on how to marry your incarcerated spouse, more and more people are choosing to marry their loved ones while incarcerated. Research shows that the stigma of such unions includes, but is not limited to: divorce, financial difficulties, judgment from society as well as family and friends, and even loneliness. These are just a few of the reasons why loving a person during retention is frowned upon by many in the marriage counseling field. They are the ones who feel that people in these situations carry this discernment with them. The effects of incarceration on a person may be imposed by the realities of society.
