Irrigated agriculture accounts for the majority of global water demand and accounts for 85% of water withdrawals in the MENA region. Water used for irrigation is water that could be used in other ways, including domestic and manufacturing uses. In the MENA region, the fact that such a large portion of freshwater withdrawals is used in the agricultural process is one of the main factors causing the very low amount of water per capita of <1000 cubic meters per year. Due to its poverty and less developed economic status, the MENA region lacks efficient agricultural technologies which would see a decrease in water wasted in the process and an increase in water remaining for human use, thus a greater amount of water available for you understand. The average water use efficiency in irrigation in MENA countries is only 50-60%, compared to best practice examples of efficiency above 80% under similar climate conditions in Australia and the southwestern United States . Since agriculture is necessary to sustain populations, the main solution to reduce both water use and waste in this sector is to increase irrigation efficiency by creating new technologies to replace currently inefficient ones, especially in countries with water resources
