On November 3, 2013, a typhoon began to form in the Philippines, it was not considered too much of a threat, but Tacloban (a city in the Philippines) began to prepare. On November 8, 2013, one of the largest typhoons in recorded history hit Tacloban, Philippines; this typhoon was known as Typhoon Haiyan or locally known as Typhoon Yolanda. Typhoon Haiyan was one of the largest storms ever recorded in history. It was a Category 5 Super Typhoon, which is the highest category on the typhoon and hurricane measurement scale. The extreme measures of the storm lasted 3 days and then spread on November 11, 2013 to China, Vietnam and some parts of Micronesia, the death toll in the Philippines alone was at least 6268 people and in 2014, the search for bodies missing still continues. This storm left approximately $313,942.20 (CND) in damage! Typhoons begin as large tropical storms; strong winds draw moisture from the oceans, and thunderstorms convert the moisture into heat. The heat causes more air to flow to the center of the storm causing evaporation. All the heat and air flows towards the center known as the eye of the typhoon to form the typhoon. Typhoons are measured by storm units as categories, just like any other storm such as hurricanes and cyclones. Several storms also have other units, an example is a tornado. Tornadoes are measured in F, the higher the number, the more powerful the storm. This rule applies to all storms including typhoons. Categories are determined based on wind speed and the size of the space it covers. A Category 1 hurricane has winds of 74-75 miles per hour and does not cause much damage to buildings and homes; a...... middle of paper......12 October 1979. In issue 6 Typhoon Sally which hit Ponape on 3 September 1964. In issue 5 Typhoon Kit which did not reach land but was still extremely powerful and had winds as fast as Typhoon Haiyan (195 miles per hour). At number 4 is Typhoon Haiyan which hit Tacloban on November 8, 2013. At number 3 is Typhoon Ida which hit Japan in September 1958. At number 2 is Typhoon Violet which also hit Japan in 1961. And the strongest storm ever recorded is Cyclone Nancy which hit Japan and other Asian countries on September 7, 1961. In conclusion, although Typhoon Haiyan was not the strongest typhoon in the world, it caused extensive damage catastrophic to the Philippines and many other parts of Asia, leaving many people killed, many homes destroyed and many lives ruined. Typhoon Haiyan is the most recent storm to enter the top 5 largest storms.
