Is Islam compatible with democracy? A question that many scholars, politicians and other people try to find an answer to. Each person would answer these questions based on their thoughts, knowledge and sometimes beliefs. Islam and democracy have been a controversial issue for many years. It never fails to be a point of interest for people who are involved in politics and/or looking to be familiar with politics. A large literature has developed arguing that Islam has all the elements of the modern condition and society. Many Muslim scholars try to provide evidence that Islam preserves democratic values. Democracy is determined by many different components such as wealth, culture, knowledge. Some people believe that religion is also part of the components of democracy. In many topics, religion is primarily seen as hindering democracy, which others disagree with. Furthermore, many try to provide verification and evidence to demonstrate that democracy is either weak or non-existent in Muslim countries. Furthermore, those people use religion, such as the verses of the Quran, to express this observable fact in clear words. On the other hand, other people believe that Islam, or religion in general, cannot be used to clarify democracy or its improvements and expansions. In this essay the topic or idea of Islam and democracy will be discussed and seen from the eyes and point of view of the two thinkers, Bernard Lewis and Irfan Ahmed. Both thinkers disagree on the compatibility between Islam and democracy. Additionally, they tend to offer many different arguments about Islam, democracy, and the political nature of Islam, among others. How many people object to different definitions of the words Islam and democracy... in the middle of the paper... invite you to dinner?" (page 462) who at this point underlined that democracy has different meanings and forms between countries, society and people. Irfan reiterates his thesis by stating that it is thanks to the contribution in democratic processes that the norms, values and interpretations of religion are reconfigured, not before the inauguration of the democratic process. Irfan Ahmed and Bernard Lewis are both thinkers who they conveyed their ideas about how Islam and democracy are incompatible with each other. Each thinker gave different arguments that uniquely supported his point of view Although they had the same point to prove, they still supported their point on a different issue, but in in some sense they still agreed. Although Islam is incompatible with democracy, there are still some democratic practices that can sometimes be seen in Muslim society..
