1.1 Organization Background Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. was founded by Sam Walton in 1962. The first Walmart store was opened in Rogers, Arkansas, United States (Walmart, 2013). Furthermore, Wal-Mart is the second largest food retailer in the world. After 1991, Wal-Mart becomes an international company, expanding its business to 26 countries outside the United States (Walmart, 2013). Wal-Mart currently has over 800,000 franchisees and more than 6,000 international stores (Walmart, 2013). Wal-Mart operates in Japan under the name SEIYU. SEIYU was founded in 1963 and is the largest supermarket chain in Japan (Walmart, 2013). Since 2002, Wal-Mart continues to acquire shares of SEIYU, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of Wal-Mart (Walmart, 2013). The nature of its business which includes supermarket chain, clothing and accommodation provision (SEIYU, 2013). Although Wal-Mart's business is very successful in the United States and some European countries, it faces problems in Japan. The problems Wal-Mart Japan (SEIYU) faces include the inability to adapt to the highly developed, culturally sensitive and rich retail environment (Boyle, 2009). Global mindset, cross-cultural competence and cross-cultural sensitivity, all these important global management skills, if Wal-Mart can effectively implement them in the transition business, it believes that it will be able to significantly improve the problems it faces in the Japanese business. Wal-Mart can also use the previously described methods to perform global management capability development, enabling the organization to effectively develop global management capabilities.
