Sarah Margaret Fuller is often just called Margaret Fuller. The reason I chose to write about her is because I found it interesting that she is known as "America's first true feminist" among other things as an editor, journalist, teacher, and literary critic. I feel like, being a woman in the 1800s, she worked hard to make a good name for herself. The works of hers that I chose to write about in particular are "The Great Lawsuit", which is a profound essay advocating for women's equality, and "The Fourth of July", which is an essay written to describe the values that Margaret he believed America had lost. Sarah Margaret Fuller was born in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts on May 23, 1810, later dropping her name for professional purposes. She was the first of nine children. His father Timothy Fuller was a lawyer, a congressman and very educated. In her youth her father educated her rigorously, teaching her Latin, Greek, French and Italian. He spent many hours a day studying and by the time he was ten he had read stories such as Shakespeare and many other classics. At the age of fourteen she left her family to attend school, and a year later she returned home to continue studying on her own (Baym). Margaret had big dreams of one day becoming a writer, but those dreams were put aside when her father suddenly died in 1835. At that time her mother was also ill and it became her responsibility to take care of her family's finances. There were not many job opportunities available to women during this time, she found a job as a teacher and accepted the position. He began teaching at Bronson Alcott's Temple School in Boston and taught there until he continued to teach at the well-known... paper center... always changing, and believed that America needed to make changes for the better . He expressed his opinion that America should not settle for what it has become and was not afraid to share his opinion on what it should be. The 4th of July is a very important day for America and its people. Without that day, it wouldn't be what it is today. Works Cited Baym, Nina and Robert S. Levine.
