Purpose and hypotheses of the studyThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences between how children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (called HFASD) ) and typical children approach friendships based on several criteria. The researchers hypothesized that, due to their lack of social skills, children with HFASD would perform worse in each category and that children with HFASD's friendships would have quality. different than those of typical children. Sample The study took place in both Israel and the United States. There were 44 children with HFASD and 48 without. Each target child also brought one of his or her closest friends (with whom they were friends for more than six months and saw each other regularly outside of school), bringing the total number of children participating to 164 children - almost entirely boys - aged between 8 and 12. Methods and procedures Since this was a multidimensional study, they were many methods are involved, both in the initial selection and evaluation of subjects and in the actual study. Initially, children in the experimental group were selected based on whether or not they had previously been diagnosed with a form of HFASD (high-functioning autism spectrum disorder) – autistic disorder or Asperger's syndrome. The children's parents were then administered the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised) and the ADOS-G (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), for which the children all obtained scores within the ASD ranges. These tests and results were provided to ensure that the group met the presumed assumption of having HFASD, so that the results were accurate. The children were also given the PP...half of the paper...friends would have disabilities. Perhaps in friendships between children who both have disabilities – whether the same or different – there is a kind of understanding about each other's particular limitations. Additionally, I would be interested in examining the friendships of HFASD children to see how aware their friends were of their disability and how their behavior may/have been affected by this knowledge (perhaps a parent urging them to be more patient and understanding , or a teacher who brought them together and led to the initial friendship).
