If you could choose between the easy path and the hard path, which would you choose? What if the hard path is better for your future or what if the easy path causes future suffering? In society people normally do what is in their best interest or choose the easier option instead of taking the more difficult path which may have better results. This is shown in The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, starring Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale takes the easy way out and doesn't tell the community that he was the one who committed adultery with Hester Prynne, which led to more pain than it saved him. He and Hester Prynne committed adultery together and as a result they have a daughter, Pearl. Hester is sentenced to the scarlet letter, or an "A" on her chest, and public humiliation, but her husband's identity is never discovered. Dimmesdale takes the easy way out and hides the secret.
