Joel and Ethan Cohen's sixth film, "Fargo", first released in 1996, has not only stood the test of time, but now it can be seen as a period film it's a sort of snapshot of a period of time not so distant, but in retrospect it shows us how much has changed in twenty years. “Fargo” is ironically set in the bleak winter of Minnesota (not North Dakota), and revolves around a convoluted kidnapping plot gone horribly wrong. Dumpy, sleazy car salesman Jerry Lundergaard (William H. Macy) is in financial trouble after embezzling money from his father-in-law's car dealership, and his world is about to collapse around him. He decides that the best way out is to "fake" his wife's kidnapping and have his father-in-law (Harve Presnell) pay the ransom for her safe return.
