When we are children, we aspire to be a superhero with unique strengths and abilities. We dream of changing the world and many of us want to become firefighters, doctors, police officers and nurses in hopes of making a positive difference in the lives of numerous people. We begin to understand step by step that the planet is much bigger than it appeared when we were younger, and that change is much more difficult to achieve. This awareness of how difficult it is to truly change the entire world manifests itself as we enter the stage of adulthood. However, these observations did not discourage me. I believe that combining youthful dreams and mature willpower can actually advance the world on some level if we act now. As Bertrand Piccard once said: “The pioneering spirit should continue, not to conquer the planet or space, but rather to improve the quality of life.” I strongly believe that people's well-being is one of the most central aspects of life. Today, fostering a healthy community is not only a necessity, but also our responsibility. Our health is not solely controlled by personal choices and hereditary factors, but is also influenced by the environment in which we reside. I firmly believe that public health is a powerful force needed to combat threats to our health. The field of science and the inner workings of the human body have always appealed to my interests. Numerous determining factors can have a huge effect on one's body and the community as a whole. As a biology major, my main goal was to expand my knowledge so that it could be useful to me and, on a larger scale, to the world in which I live. I came to understand that a career in healthcare was the best way for me to reach out and help others. This realization was achieved through va...... middle of paper ......r numerous patients who came for treatment were economically disadvantaged, and I observed the adversity that resulted. The doctors at the center combined calm and compassion with medical expertise in a form of complete healing that I expected, but rarely saw in poor communities. I want to bring better healthcare to underserved populations with the same personal care and attention that I have experienced during this internship, to be the voice of these patients who need proper care. I have continually participated in medical missions and other health-related projects, and although it was challenging at first, incorporating the importance of health for each individual has been a very rewarding experience. I learned that healthcare is a universal need and also a question of justice. Works Citeddartmouth
