In times of war, both Hamlet and Macbeth are considered tragedies and both main characters are considered tragic heroes. There are many differences and similarities. For one thing, they both have a psychotic, mental breakdown at some point in the story. Hamlet is acting mad to deceive Claudius, while Macbeth has truly gone mad in his lust for power and selfish motives. Both will become real, with the only exception that Hamlet does so through dishonorable means. «Because in my way he lies. Stars, hide your fires; Don't let the light see my deep black desires. The eye winks at the hand, but let it be what the eye fears, when it has finished, to see” Macbeth (1.4 57-60). Hamlet is automatically heir to the throne if his uncle dies. A stark contrast between the two is that: Macbeth is not an honorable person, because he slaughters many for useless and superstitious reasons, while Hamlet wants to avenge his father's death.
