The Count of Monte Cristo is a novel written by Alexander Dumas that tells the story of Edmond Dante, a 19-year-old sailor. The story begins with Edmond arriving in port with the news that he will become captain of a ship, he is also engaged to a beautiful woman called Mercedes, Edmond is very well liked and has been successful early in life, this causes jealousy between Edmond and three others men Danglars, Fernand Mondego and Caderousse. Danglars the treasure of the ship of which Edmond has just been appointed captain, becomes jealous simply because Edmond has been so successful at a young age. Fernand became jealous of Edmond because Fernand is in love with Edmond's girlfriend Mercedes. Caderousse, Edmond's neighbor, is jealous of Edmond because Edmond is much luckier than Caderousse. Together these three men, Danglars Fernand and Caderousse, draft a letter accusing Edmond of the act of treason. Edmond is in fact carrying a letter for the recently deceased ship's captain to deliver to a group of Bonapartists in Paris, so even if Edmond himself is not a Bonapartist, the task is still enough for him to be tried for treason. The prosecutor Villefort sees through the plan of Danglars, Fernand and Cadousse and decides not to send Edmond to prison until Edmond reveals the name of the intended recipient who is Villerfort's father. Not wanting to jeopardize his career, Villerfort sends Edmond to prison for treason. While in prison Edmond begins to think about suicide and falls into depression. Edmond then begins to plan his way to get revenge on the men who hurt him, starting with his plan to escape from prison. Edmond Dante begins as a... paper king... who takes revenge on the three men. This is important because it shows that Edmond has gone from happiness to despair to anger. Edmond then pursues the men and their families ultimately succeeding in destroying them and their families. Edmond Dantes is a man who has faced many things in his life, including the love of his life leaving him, the death of his father while he was in prison, and having to spend 14 years of his life in prison even though he is a innocent man. who has not committed any crime. Edmond Dantes goes through many changes in The Count of Monte Cristo, he begins the story as a happy man with little worries in life, Edmond is then sent to prison where he faces despair and even thinks about suicide, once Edmond escapes from prison the his anger presented madness of revenge.
