Despite musical taste, age or nationality, everyone is bound to know the famous rapper Eminem. Many eagerly awaited his return to the music industry; while some hoped to never see his name on the charts again. After a long hiatus from the industry, Eminem returned in 2010, rising to the top of the charts once again. Critics have claimed that his lyrical content is inappropriate and has a negative effect on the nation's youth, but his fans maintain that he and his 2010 comeback have been a source of inspiration and encouragement in their lives. Eminem was born Marshall Mathers III on October 17, 1972. Home life was extremely troubled. He was raised by his mother who was only 15 years old when she gave birth to him. His father left when he was only six months old; he never returned and did not stay in touch. His mother did not have a permanent job, which in turn forced them to move often. He changed schools several times a year. He was often bullied at school and was once even beaten until he was hospitalized. They moved back and forth between Missouri and Detroit. Finally, at the age of twelve, they remained in Detroit, Michigan. Due to failing eighth grade three times, Marshall dropped out of school; continuing in his life of trials and poverty. at the age of twenty-six he and his girlfriend, Kim, had their daughter Hailey. Most rappers and all the successful ones at that time were black. Even though Eminem was Caucasian and rejected by most other local rappers, he pursued his passion. He entered into "rap battles", that is, rapping in free style against an opponent. It was the rap battles that brought him to fame, when someone from the Aftermath record label asked him for a demo CD. They wanted to bring it back to the owner, Dr. Dre. Dre l...... middle of paper...... writing and rapping. They see a man who is a great father who never knew his own. They see someone who has been rejected, ridiculed, and bullied stand up and persevere through all the controversy, addiction, and protests. Works Cited (n.d.).
