Using field trips helps children apply their knowledge to a topic, but the excitement comes from the way the teacher gathers information. If a teacher uses worksheets to assess what his or her students learned on the field trip, students are more likely to shut down or not engage because they are simply not interested. Field trips should be a way for teachers to expand their students' learning experience. Teachers should be prohibited from assigning worksheets on field trips, but should be encouraged to find new and improved ways to assess the knowledge students have gained from the experience.
