As she suffers from her wound she quotes Psalm 38.5-6 "My wounds stink and are corrupt, I am troubled, I am greatly bent, I mourn all the time day ." Then she puts some leaves on her side and thanks to God's blessing she is healed and can travel again. This is significant because throughout the entire narrative, Rowlandson repeatedly invokes the word of God and sees in his mind that God is indeed answering his pleas. If she continued to read the Scriptures and received no answer, nor any encouragement through the word, then it is likely that she would have fallen into despair and may have given up along the way.
