The strengths of my unit program are that I have tried many different types of lessons for my students. These included: preliminary understanding discussion, game simulation, interactive PowerPoint presentation, map work, reading and analyzing primary documents, interpreting visual images, film analysis, compare and contrast, continuum, debate, station activity, work group and individual research. I have tried to incorporate them into lessons more than once to address the wide range of learners: visual, written, and verbal learners. I also worked on asking students questions that were not just basic factual questions, but higher order thinking questions that examined themes and trends in history and societies. This is why I choose the Empires and the Rise of Empires theme. I wanted there to be an overall connection with these different groups of people around the world. One of the main links was the idea that they were all empires in their own right, some more successful and well-known than others. The second subtheme of this unit that I try to make students understand is the importance of cultural fusion and interaction. We have addressed this throughout the unit and especially as basic background for the entire unit. The weakness of my unit plan was that I sometimes felt like I had to make too much of the PowerPoint interactive, to provide some background information for each topic or group of people that was presented. This took up valuable time compared to the total time I had for my unit. Many times I felt like I was rushing through parts of my unit due to SGOs, tests, assemblies, fire drills, or lockdowns. This is common with every teacher, I just need to work on adapting to the situation better and changing my...... middle of paper...... I should have done a better job checking the students and testing them on their research to see if they found the correct answers and answered all the required questions. I would improve the Unit in the following ways: I would try to eliminate some of the repetitive and weak higher order assessments by thinking summatively. These would be the notes and vocabulary definitions for a given section of a chapter in their book. Sometimes I would ask students to do this and just take a mini section to look at it in more depth. I should have done more hands-on activities in the station where students look at artifacts and answer questions about their purpose and nature. I will make sure that if I provide a summary test on some of the content students study, this is done before giving them time to work on the unit project.
