As the title suggests, kites play an important role in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. They appear numerous times within the text and prove surprisingly versatile in their literary function. They provide common ground for characters whose interests don't normally intersect. They are also present as a very powerful symbol, adding an extra dimension to this already literature-rich novel. By reversing roles and transcending generations, it reveals itself as a multi-faceted medium. This novel presents two almost irreconcilable individuals. The main character, Amir, grew up without a mother; therefore, Amir remained with his father, Baba, to please him as he grew up. Early in his life, it became obvious that pleasing Baba would prove problematic. They simply did not have similar interests as a result of the fact that Baba “begat a son who preferred to bury his face in books of poetry rather than go hunting” (Hosseini 19). Baba was described as a very dominant figure, six feet five inches tall, who often enjoyed hunting and managing his own affairs. Amir, on the other hand, was of unremarkable stature even for his young age and was often found reading poems and stories with his friend and servant Hassan, who, despite being a year younger than Amir, often beats Amir in athletic area. skills like throwing stones when “Hassan blasted his stone eight times. The most I [Amir] could do was five,” (Hosseini 14) or even just running when Amir said, “Hassan was running faster than me [Amir], and I was falling behind” (Hosseini 53). The son was simply not very sporty. On the contrary, the athletic father also enjoyed playing football very much as a child and later enjoyed being a spectator of the sport; as a result...... half of the paper... ...r image had happened from the past with the reversal it entails. The kite is important in this situation because the reversal could not have happened in any other scenario. Sohrab would no longer interact with the world at this point, and the only way it could have been paralleled would have been with a kite battle Amir had swapped places with Hassan through Sohrab with the use of the kite Completely proving to be a very dynamic object in this novel, it works on multiple levels. It provides a connection between two characters who reside in totally different spheres of interests. It acts on a symbolic level as a symbol of freedom for the characters within it. It also provides a means for role reversal between two characters in this novel. Kites are shown to be quite powerful in their presence and function in the novel The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini.
