William Golding stated that "Lord of the Flies as an attempt to trace the defects of society to the defects of human nature". Golding uses dynamic symbols in Lord of the Flies to demonstrate that the problems of today's society are due to flaws in human nature. Ralph symbolizes how appearance and good looks win the hearts of the community, while Piggy symbolizes intelligence and wisdom. Jack, the tyrant leader who uses fear to dominate and control society, while Simon uses peace and love to show gratitude to the community. Golding manipulates his main characters to demonstrate that human beings are full of flaws. Ralph is Golding's way of representing our natural human flaw in how we choose to follow seemingly attractive and powerful leaders. Golding makes Ralph the leader of the boys' community when he says "Shut up... It seems to me that we should have a leader who decides things." (22). Roger, a “little one,” at the beginning of the book gives the idea of having a vote, which Ralph wins by a landslide. Golding states: “None of the boys could have found a good reason for this; the intelligence displayed was traceable to Piggy, while the most obvious leader was Jack. (22). The author provides the reader with a beautiful description of Ralph “But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that set him apart: there was his size and good looks; and in the darkest way; even more powerful was the conch.”(22). Ralph's appearance shows that he is dominant over the chorus. Through Ralph, Golding is showing us that we like to have strong and beautiful leaders. Just in current events Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former governor of California, has gained a lot of media attention due to his divorce. The media and the public love to look at beautiful people... middle of paper... Jack hunters symbolize Hitler's army. In Lord of the Flies Jack reproduces Hitler's actions. Jack becomes a power-hungry savage who feeds on the weakness of others. Golding lets physical power rule over knowledge and wisdom when Jack kills Piggy. Physical power may be a thing to fear, but numerical strength can overwhelm fear and intimidation. It is obvious that Golding used symbols to show the flaws in our human nature. Golding points out that we like to follow the beautiful, the rich and the famous. He also emphasizes that wisdom and knowledge do not show importance in choosing a leader. Simon helps show us that evil exists in every person just like Jesus did. Jack shows how without organized control things become physical and ferocity takes over. Without organized control, wisdom and knowledge, civilization cannot exist.
