Many young adults and college educators argue that the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) should be lowered, but I disagree. I don't think lowering the legal drinking age would be a good idea because alcohol is a leading cause of death among young adults and also affects their academic performance. Lowering the legal drinking age would just be a huge mistake. The government should instead raise it above 21 or enforce the MLDA more. Since the United States adopted the Uniform Drinking Age Act of 1984, there has been a decrease in alcohol-related traffic accidents among minors. However, college and university education leaders have pointed out that excessive alcohol consumption among college students could be a likely cause to revise the MLDA and lower it (Saylor 330). Many educators believe that if the drinking age is lowered, it will reduce excessive alcohol consumption and many of the consequences caused by illegal drinking (Martinez et al, 409). But in my opinion they should wait, alcohol has so many consequences and if you are not mature enough yet you shouldn't do it. The MLDA should be enforced more. Underage students should not have the opportunity or freedom to consume alcohol. Consuming alcohol is something you should do when you are mature and responsible. If you are not responsible you shouldn't drink because you will probably end up doing something that will cost you later. To conclude, I believe drinking alcohol is something you should do responsibly. I don't think anyone under the age of 21 would be responsible enough to consume alcohol. Lowering the MLDA would cause many more problems and accidents for young adults. The MLDA should be applied more or increased; young people should be prevented from consuming alcohol. If the MLDA were not lowered, there would be more deaths and injuries
