Man has always told stories of his attempt to escape death, but he has surely met with an untimely fate, and this story is no different. One of the main symbols of this is a large grandfather clock that resides in the black room at the end of the corridor. Like most large pendulum clocks, this one produces a loud chime every hour on the hour. In fact, the ringing of this clock was so loud that during the dance, every time it struck, the party stopped and the music stopped until the reverberation of the clock's chiming stopped. This clock is a very clear symbol of death, as understood by Poe. With its constant chimes every hour, it reminds guests that as time passes, death gets closer and closer. As the night progresses, the clock periodically stops the party until the uninvited guest arrives, leading Prospero to stop everything with a wave of his hand. It was midnight when the symbolic guest of the Red Death arrived as stated by Poe; “But now there were twelve chimes to be rung from the clock bell; and so it happened, perhaps, that more thought crept, with more time, into the meditations of the thoughtful among those who dabbled. And that's what happened too." Not only did the clock count the hours until his arrival, but the time is also very significant: midnight. A moment recognized by many as the "witching" hour due to its nature
