Topic > Choosing the Right Career Path for You - 725

For as long as civilization has been able to record history, we have been able to identify the type of career fields that have existed throughout history. Not much has changed over the centuries; Ancient Greece was made up of farmers and fishermen just like today. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ was a carpenter by trade, he followed in the footsteps of his adoptive father. I believe that many people throughout history have aimed to follow the same line of work as their parents, because they respected their mother/father; Parents have a great influence on our career choices. Unfortunately, many people eventually realize that they earned degrees/licences in their chosen line of work for no meaningful purpose other than to fulfill the desires of others. I think some of us realize our terrible career choices because we lack a calling. In the pamphlet “Let Your Life Speak,” Parker J. Palmer (2000) explained his desperation about teaching sociology at Georgetown to the PendleHill community. Palmer didn't feel like the career path he'd decided on was meant for him; Palmer stated, “Despite the American myth, I cannot be or do what I desire… There are some roles and relationships in which we thrive and others in which we wither and die.” (p.44) I believe that an individual's career path is one of the most important choices that individual will make in their entire life. The career paths we take impact the world over. For example, if Albert Einstein did not become a theoretical physicist, the theory of general relativity might not exist today; if Einstein had not warned President Franklin D. Roosevelt of potential bomb development by other countries, the Manhattan Project may not have taken place: the project acted as a chain reaction towards... middle of paper... ...the desire to have a career meets the world's great need for our work, this is the meeting point of the goals in our lives. Unfortunately, there is no guide on how to live a life with purpose and make meaningful choices. However, I believe that an individual's religious beliefs and family support can help make an individual's journey easier. Not all of us find our calling, some of us look at our destiny and turn away, for fear of change. Others never have the opportunity to find their calling due to bad influences in their lives. I feel that the place God calls to is one's calling, if an individual is courageous and puts their ego aside, they may be able to listen to God's instructions; fortunately, I followed such instructions, and this is why I am currently enrolled in a prestigious university to earn my degree, to achieve my calling!
