This mistreatment includes the use of restraints, poor health conditions, sexual abuse by correctional officers, and the isolation of women locked up in high-security units. Perhaps the most alarming part of this report is that the United States has accepted an international treaty agreed upon by one hundred and forty-five countries that are currently legally bound by that treaty, but only as stated in the Constitution and nothing more. Women in American prisons are victims of rape and various forms of sexual abuse by prison staff. Furthermore, as stated in Jill's story, sick or pregnant women are unduly and unfairly forced by law to be bound in chains while giving birth for safety reasons. This enslavement of pregnant women is a total violation of the basic human rights of incarcerated women. The last topic discussed in this report was the fact that most prisons, more specifically, maximum security prisons, are developed and cater to men and their gender-specific issues. Only recently has the situation begun to improve, but conditions are still scandalous and some of the high-risk units within prisons violate the fundamental right to privacy and dignity by allowing male guards to see these women at all times without no privacy.
