Imposing Affirmative Action in El Paso Have you ever applied for a job knowing you were more than qualified for the position? But somehow you get overlooked by someone who is bilingual and perhaps less qualified. Well, I have, especially here in El Paso. El Paso, a constantly growing city with more: schools, hospitals and jobs; Where many have flourished in these efforts. However, non-bilingual people appear to be excluded from these opportunities. But instead of being unemployed; The city should implement Affirmative Action so that many non-bilinguals and minorities in El Paso have as many opportunities as those native to the city. One thing El Paso has no shortage of is diversity. El Paso has a population of 672,538 (2012) with a demographic of 92.8 (2012) White and 81.7% (2012) Hispanic, leaving the remainder of minorities under 5% (quickfacts.census.gov). El Paso includes the Fort Bliss military base. Fort Bliss brings thousands of Soldiers and their families from around the world. El Paso not only includes Fort Bliss, but is also located along the Mexican border. With various languages and races, El Paso is its own melting pot. While diversity is a beautiful thing, problems arise when Spanish is the primary language spoken, and few others are not. Many places in El Paso speak Spanish and a language barrier occurs when the distinguished few meet the masses. Although being bilingual is an advantage socially, one should not forget that due to different backgrounds, not everyone is reluctant to be bilingual in Spanish. Spanish is a beautiful language, living in El Paso allows the language to flow through the city. But instead of focusing only on Spanish, there are several people who speak Japanese, German... middle of paper... to the advantage of minorities is because sometimes you can be bilingual, but because the pigment of a skin the givers of job do not give the possibility of finding interest in the applicant to discover one of his skills. Affirmative action will allow employers to meet certain demographic requirements, allowing equal opportunity for the candidate to pursue employment. While some may find Affirmative Action to be biased in favor of minorities, this is the case because Affirmative Action forces employers to view all demographics, instead of focusing on just one. Affirmative Action takes race into consideration so that candidates feel more confident in the company's treatment of employees. In conclusion Affirmative Action is the best solution for minorities looking for work. Affirmative Action forces employers to meet certain demographic standards and focus on credentials rather than being bilingual.
