International Paper Company is the largest pulp and paper company in the world with manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia and North Africa. When it began on January 31, 1898 in Albany, New York, it came about through the merger of 17 paper and paper mills of varying sizes, technological advancement, and capabilities. However, even then International Paper was an industry leader as the nation's largest producer of newsprint. At the time it supplied 60% of all newsprint sold in the United States, as well as exporting its products to Argentina, Australia and England. Under its first president, International Paper established the first laboratory in the pulp and paper industry, as well as taking part in the industry's first collective bargaining agreement and implementing a progressive timber harvesting system that protected young trees.
