Topic > Identity in Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury - 826

Do you honestly decide to take the action you just took? The answer should be yes, however the main character of the book “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury would answer no. This book is a science fiction set in an unnamed futuristic city. The main character named Montag begins to doubt the society and tries to find out the truth by retracing many events and meeting key people. Within this story, identity is a major theme and Montag shows its importance through himself. During his journey of discovery, he gradually loses his own identity as a mind, body, and even existence, and causes identity crises as he takes on the characteristics of the people he encounters. First, Montag loses control over his own mind. At the beginning of the story he meets a beautiful girl named Clarisse. She is a particular girl who questions society and how people live there. He tells Montag about the beauty of nature and also questions him about his work and life. Although he is proud to be a firefighter, Clarisse says, "I think it's so strange that you're a firefighter, it just doesn't seem right, somehow" (21). Montag feels “his body splitting into heat and coldness, softness and hardness, trembling and non-trembling, the two halves rubbing against each other” (21) in his words. Everything Clarisse says is something new to him and he gradually becomes very influenced by this mysterious girl. In fact, the girl's impact is too significant for her mind to be absorbed by her when she talks to Beatty, the fire captain. “Suddenly it seemed like a much younger voice was speaking for him. He opened his mouth and it was Clarisse McClellan saying, 'Didn't firefighters prevent fires instead of fueling them and starting them?'” (31). His mind is not controlled by himself in this part. It takes over Clarisse's mind and this causes confusion in her mind. It can be said that this event is an introduction to the loss of his entire identity. The next thing he loses is control of his body. When he meets Faber, an old retired English professor, he is given a tool called a green bullet.
